FAQ
How do I finish wooden panels?
Finishing wood panels is an important step to protect them, prevent or minimise discolouration, improve their aesthetics and make them durable for use in various applications. Here are the basic steps to effectively finish wood panels:
Step 1: Preparation
Make sure the wooden panels are clean, dry and free of dust and dirt before you start.
Step 2: Sanding
Use sandpaper with a suitable grit. If you want to prepare the wood for finishing by removing bumps and any remaining roughness start with coarse sandpaper such as 120 or 150, then gradually move to finer sandpaper such as 180 or finer. Want to test if you have the right sandpaper? Always sand first on an area that is not visible, such as the bottom or inside of a panel.
Step 3: Cleaning
Remove all sanding dust and dirt with a dust brush or clean cloth.
Step 4: Choice of finish
Choose the desired finishing method based on your needs. Popular finishing options include:
- Painting: Use a primer for untreated wood and then apply one or more coats of paint.
- Stain: Stain is used to preserve the natural look of the wood while also providing instant protection. Water-based and oil-based stains are available.
- Lacquer: Lacquers offer a durable finish that protects the wood and can give it a glossy or matt appearance.
- Oil: Wood oil is often used to nourish wood, protect it and maintain a natural look.
- Beeswax: Beeswax is used to seal and polish wood and gives it a soft sheen.
Tip! If necessary, order a sample of the material so that you can try the stain, varnish or oil first. That way you can better assess the desired effect.
Step 5: Applying the finish
Apply the chosen finish evenly to the wooden panel with a brush, roller, cloth, or spray gun, depending on the method chosen.
Step 6: Drying
Allow the finish to dry according to the recommended drying times on the product packaging. Ensure environmental conditions are suitable for drying (temperature and humidity).
Step 7: Repeat if necessary:
If the desired finish is not sufficiently achieved, repeat the application of the finish and sand between coats if necessary.
Step 8: Protection and maintenance
After finishing, ensure regular maintenance and protection to prolong the life of the wooden panel. This can include periodic reapplication of the finish, cleaning and protection from moisture and scratches.
Choosing the right finish depends on the intended look, functionality and intended use of the wood panels. Follow the instructions of the paint shop or manufacturer of the finishing products for best results.
