In this DIY project, Bas shows how to use space smartly! He used the basement stairwell to install custom shoe racks. He used custom-sawn black MDF for this. Read more about his approach and experience below.

Description of Bas

An MDF shoe rack that fits perfectly in the niche of the basement stairs. This so that the hallway is not full of shoes every day ;-). Previously we had the "plastic Ikea cabinets" but besides the fact that the shoes cannot air in them, the cabinets are of questionable quality. A wooden variant is much sturdier and is also precisely tailored. You can adjust the sizes as described to your own wishes, everyone usually has a niche that is not used, for shoe size 44 you need a minimum shelf height of 30 cm, but I went for 35 so that you can easily put them in and out. you can get out of it.

How I made this project

Required: (adjust dimensions as desired)
16.0 x 92.5 x 12.0 cm Moisture-resistant MDF black 12mm
16.0 x 35.0 x 12.0 cm Moisture-resistant MDF black 12mm

You start by pre-drilling the MDF to prevent splitting. Since you are going to screw on the end side. You do this with a 3mm wood drill. Then you start making the shelves. You take 2x a side part and a long plank and screw them together at right angles (90 degree angle). Then place 2 or 3 shelves on top of each other and take a long part that you screw to the front. This ensures strength and that the shoes stay in place. I went for a height of 12.0 cm as we have teenagers who like high 'Jordans'; wear. For the 2nd and 3rd shelf, let the long part cross over so that the shelves are connected to each other.

Dimensions of my DIY project

Height: Can be made as desired, 1 shelf is 36 .2 cm high and 92.0 cm wide. With 5 stacked shelves you are 181.0 cm high and 92.0 cm wide. Ideally, I would like to place an extra shelf on top of the cupboard.
