What exactly is MDF?

MDF belongs to the family of fibreboards. It consists of wood fibres that are compressed under high pressure. The fibres are held together by resin. Therefore, it is important that you degrease the material well before you start painting.

Machining MDF

MDF is very easy to process: when milling and sawing, the material does not splinter. MDF blank is absorbent, which makes it important to treat the material well with a primer before finishing. The ends require some extra attention. To counteract the absorbing effect of the ends, there are various possibilities: use diluted wood glue with a little water, putty or a special edge sealant.

Different types of MDF

MDF blank is strong and has a high resistance to wear. This makes it a very popular material for making furniture. Do you want to paint the material? Then it might be a good idea to consider the variant MDF Paint Carrier. This saves a lot of work as the material is already primed. MDF Black Water-resistant is the choice if you want to paint the windowsill in a dark colour or transparent. If you want to use MDF in a humid area such as a bathroom or kitchen, you can choose MDF Moisture resistant V313.

Alternative materials

As well as MDF, you can also make your window sill from Pine or spruce carpentry panel. These are solid wood panels with a warm and natural look, because the wood grain is visible. Furniture Boards are also a good option because of the plastic layer that is pressed onto the panel, making it resistant to UV rays, dirt and impact. We will explain the different materials in more detail.

Pine or spruce carpentry panel

Spruce wood has a light colour, in which knots and flames are noticeable. Compared to pine, spruce is slightly lighter in colour and weight. Spruce is a somewhat softer type of wood and odourless, while pine is slightly more yellow in colour and heavier in weight. It is a somewhat tougher type of wood, which makes it easier to process.

Finishing carpentry panels

The long sides of the joinery panels are bevelled on both sides by 3 mm. You should therefore consider carefully which width you choose, because if you saw lengthwise, this finish is omitted on one side. This finish is not standard on the short sides. During the ordering process, you can choose to have the cut-to-size panel also finished on the short sides with the same bevel depth of 3 mm.n

Machining carpentry panels

Carpentry panel is easy to work with. You can finish it with a clear varnish or stain, but also with a coloured varnish for a more opaque result. The joinery panel has minimal movement, which is a fine feature when used for furniture!

Furniture panel

Furniture panel white already has it in the name. It is ideal for use in making furniture, for example a window sill. Furniture panel consists of chipboard with a plastic layer (melamine) pressed onto both sides. The long sides are also finished with a plastic layer (edge banding). This plastic layer makes the panel immediately ready for use, it does not need to be painted!

Different sizes of furniture panels

Furniture panels are available in many different formats. This has to do with the edge banding on the long sides. It is therefore good to think about the width of the panel you order, because if it has to be sawn lengthwise, the panel will lose its finish on that side. You can also finish the end side yourself with edge banding, which you can glue on with an iron. So using a furniture panel in the correct width saves a lot of time when it comes to finishing the ends! A plastic windowsill is one step closer.

Paint window sill

For an attractive result, you should paint the MDF of your windowsill. This will work anyway, but we would like to give you some tips to paint the MDF windowsill super-tight. That way, you will enjoy your work for a very long time. So read our Practical tip: Painting MDF. If necessary, prime the MDF before attaching the window sill to the shelf supports or as a transfer window sill.

Assembling a window sill from MDF

Cutting a window sill to size is a piece of cake, but when the material is delivered to your home it is up to you to secure it to the wall. How? We show you various options!

Fix window sill over existing

If you install the windowsill over the existing windowsill, it is important that you take the required materials into account. Installation is slightly easier with a transfer windowsill, as the holes are already in the wall and you only need to slide the windowsill over the existing one. So there is no need to demolish the existing windowsill.Use mounting kit to fix the window sills together. Press the new windowsill firmly onto the existing one for a solid result. For a nice finish, you can seal the edges; this way the windowsill is also immediately waterproof.

Window sill on shelf supports

You can use shelf holders to attach your window sill to the wall. Depending on the weight you want to support, you can choose the shelf supports that are right for you. One shelf holder can carry a weight of 2 kilograms while another is suitable for the weight of three adults in a row. So take a good look at this! Use good plugs and wood screws to attach the shelf supports to the wall. And check with a spirit level that the windowsill is completely straight!

There are also special shelf supports that you can fix on top of the heating. This can be a solution if you want to place the windowsill directly on the heating.
